The Emma Maersk

Harwich: Whopper vessel on way
By John Hyde - Evening Gazette
A world record-holding ship will be sailing through Harwich Harbour with a special Christmas delivery.

Emma Maersk, the largest container ship in the world, will make its first call in the UK on Saturday, when it arrives at Felixstowe. Measuring 397m long x 57m wide, the vessel is the size of almost four football pitches.

She can carry 13,500 tonnes of goods - destined for high streets across the UK and brought in ahead of the busy Christmas period.

170,000 tons and a 15metre draft-the picture does'nt do it justice. Thats what I call big. I wonder how many other British ports it could dock at? Southampton?

20 rows of 40ft containers!!! I used to sail with Blue Star and the California and Columbia Stars' had about 7 rows in front of the bridge, and 2 rows behind the bridge.

I saw the Albert maersk going past SIBS, apparently the second largest container ship in the world, as you can see much like the Emma:

There was a fascinating programme on Radio 4 on Monday morning at 11am this week, talking about this very boat, and the whole container business in general, and also Felixtowe port. Well worth a listen via the internet. There's another part this coming Monday.

Actually, its "pictures".. I missed them the first time. After clicking on the link, scroll right down to the bottom. The last one is particularly impressive I think....
