I have heard that playing heavy metal music scares them off or poring a quantity of diesel on the water, any other tips?

I should imagine that playing loud heavy metal music through the hull during an ocean crossing will drive you potty.

Hitting a submerged object and getting caught in a bad storm are my two worse fears regarding ocean crossings - but as people on here say all the time it is a dangerous past time and all part of the risk-based decision one makes regarding to cross or not to cross...........

I just hope it never happens to you or anyone else for that matter.
