Vertigo like sensation after sailing

Benign positional paroximal vertigo-the crystals/debri in the balance canal-they move around in the fluid brushing across the fine hairs which pick up the fluid movement and translate this spirit level into balance.
However there are other factors can effect your balance.Damage to high frequency hearing/hearing loss can cause these symptoms-did this several years ago shaping a piece of stainless shhet on my anvil without protection and I have just done it again recently when my trailer tyre blew out near my ear.
Getting older doesnt help-try standing on one foot with your eyes shut-when I was in my 40s I could still do this-at sixty I wobble all over the place because balance becomes desinsitised as you get older.

The full definition of Vertigo is a medical condition that leads to a sense of spinning, dizziness and disorientation. It can be caused by a variety of illnesses including inner ear disorders and certain brain conditions.

It would definitely be worth seeing the doc, the ears should be fixable and it's the most common but the brain issue is a different matter. I don't know what the other illnesses are but the doc should know.

Interestingly I also suffer from "proper" vertigo, and as a rockclimber I know what that is! I had never considered the relationship with landsickness.

I think you are talking about acrohobia (fear of heights) which is not vertigo (though sometimes incorrectly called that). Vertigo is the sensation of movement or spinning when one is actually standing still.
