Anyone experience in removing verdigris - the green deposit from bronze / brass fittings?

I have heard of <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.rustoff-int.com/marine/index.html> rust-off </A> but have never used it.

Given i do not want to use wire wool around the prop shaft / stuffing box for obvious reasons, I'm after a friendly product

Ideas?

Don't know if this would suit, but our local ironmonger told me that all the (numerous) antique dealers in our home town use kette descaler. We tried it and were very pleasantly surprised.

Kettle descaler comes in more than one variety. The formic acid types are fierce. The citric acid ones are much gentler.

Wash off with fresh water, of course.

Viakal, that limescale remover stuff, may do it for you.

I was chatting to a longboat owner at Henley the other day and he had the most impressive brasswork and he swore by the stuff.

Cheers

I have just called Rust Off, and it look like it's a Soltron style product. It's an enzyme, available in liquid (for dipping) or gel (for painting on).

I am being sent a sample so I'll report back on its success.

If the fittings are removed from the boat, soak them in ordinary malt vinegar. This will remove all the green and then you can polish if desired. They'll go green again tho' and personally I think the green of weathered bronze looks OK. If you ever want some bronze fittings restored to a mirror shine contact Fareham Electroplating - they did a brilliant job for me a few years ago. Enjoy your bronze, Geoff

I have now used Rust Off and it's excellent. As an enzyme, it doesn't attack anything except the verdigris and iron oxide, leaving them sparkling clean.

May need two coats. You paint it on, let it do its work, then wipe / wash it off. Easy.

Doing all the bronze in the boat this lay-up, and will then spray them with grease to protect them.

Really good. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
