I remember reading some while ago that a new Marina in Ventnor Isle of Wight was being created, in fact I'm certain I've even seen a photo or two of the new harbour wall. I can't find any details of this marina at all though now, not on the internet, not in the Almanac, not anywhere. Does anyone on here know if it actually exists?

It exists all right, but not a marina. Do a google search on ventnor harbour and you'll get sites like http://www.iwep-regeneration.com/key-projects/ventnor-harbour.asp

Thanks Brendan - Have you been there? If it's not a marina, what actually is it? Can you berth there and get ashore (without a dinghy) and how safe is it to navigate? I will do a search as you suggest and see what I can find - thanks again.

Thanks again Brendan - done a search as you suggested and managed to get a phone number for the harbourmaster at Ventnor - called him - and he couldn't have been more helpful!! Said we'd be made very welcome and even often to come out and escort us in!! May well give it a crack on Sunday if the weather's OK - will make a nice change from normal Solent hops.

Aaargh, I hate the word 'holistic'. Whats a holistic marina for chrissakes? Seems very shortsighted not to put in visitors berths or even just buoys
Regarding Ventnor, I've seen boats anchored off in settled weather but it's very open so lunchtime stop only, methinks

From speaking to the harbourmaster, the council have run out of money for the project hence no pontoons, but apparently there are visitors buoys.

That will be about right - spend 90% of the money, and then not recognise that the other 10% is required to start generating a reasonable income from visitors.

It is a small sheltered harbour mainly for local fishing boats. There are no pontoons and it dries. Picture here. It now has a couple of piles and a large yellow fishing boat or two which occupy most of the shoreward side.

Harbourmaster I spoke to said nothing about it drying - He did say that that it becomes quite shallow in Springs but not shallow enough to worry us (draught 2ft). Are you saying it dries completely?

Local talk was that it dried, I haven't actually been over myself and seen at low water. It hasn't been seen as a viable option for IW boaters. I would certainly recheck with HM. If I can get more info before weekend I will post.

From this site:
"Water depths at low water in the seaward part of the haven will be up to 1.5m. The haven will partially dry out at Low Water"
It looks like position in the harbour is significant. I must drive over and check it out first hand one day.

Re: Barry, did you get over to Ventnor? (nm)

Yes - Got round to Ventnor, was a really nice trip. Couldn't get into the harbour because of low water but the Harbourmasters were really helpful - came out in their RIB to see if we needed anything, offered us a lift ashore etc etc. Apparently there is always enough water in the harbour top keep us afloat but getting across the sand bar at the entrance is an issue in low springs. Will definitely go round there again and possibly do an overnight stop next time.
