Ventimeter?

In the days before modern electronic gizmos I used one continually. Can't comment on its accuracy (don't blow into it to see if it works - it causes condensation) but educating us into what, say F4 felt like as pressure on your face and the motion of the boat was a meaningful learning curve.
 
I had one too. No idea of its accuracy but bound to give a reasonable figure. Its not as though wind speed is a non varying quantity that needs to be measured with great accuracy or precision.

Dont know what happened to mine. Left it on someones boat I guess.

Really did not know they were still available. Must get another one.
 
Used to be the standard device for hang gliding, back in the days when absolute wind strength was a limiting factor. Very good at showing gusts, but needs to be held accurately into wind. As with all hand-held wind meters, you need clear air - not a problem at a HG takeoff site.
 
Yes, we've got one on the boat. It seems fairly accurate, as Gandy says, you need to make sure it's pointing directly into wind. Only really use it out of interest, usually when it's gusting hard, to see if our estimates are correct...
 
They are reliable and consistent, but to relate a reading taken at at deck level to the standard height of 10 meters used by professional meteorologists, one has to increase the reading by 33%,which reduces the perceived authority of the instrument, compared with one fitted at a masthead .

That is correct as per its instructions.
I picked this (would say much older one) up at a market in Glasgow for less than a fiver.
Judging by its storage container which is a cardboard cylinder jointed in the centre and has all the instructions printed on its outer surface it is maybe 20-30yrs old.
There is a small packet inside which has two "Elastic" bulkhead mountings,( one spare) so it can be used as a bulkhead compass.

there is one on ebay at present hope this is of use :)
