Velvet drive ??

how does velvet drive work - are they gears or automatic transmisions ?? I dont know anything about them as I have always had sterndrives !!!!

As far as I know they are just a normal hydraulic gearbox, built by Borg Warner.
I had one behind a 6 cylinder Ford Lehman 120 h.p. that was a very reliable unit.

As with all hydraulic boxes they use a multi-plate clutch (similar to a motorcycle clutch)that is activated by oil pressure on a piston pressing them together. That is the only hydraulic part of the operation. When the selector gear lever is moved a valve directs oil to either the forward or reverse piston - simples!!!
