I was really looking forward to following this race on the internet over the winter months. It was fascinating watching the Vendee Globe and Helen McArthur. But I can’t find a way into the good bits on the WWW site (here ) without having to pay £19.99.

Poor do in my opinion.

The sponsors are getting my interest why charge me as well?

me too.... i cant find a way. think bbc news 24 will be covering the start at 12... they have being coming live from spain this morning with a few interviews. lets hope.

Not the best designed site is it?
They don't tell you there is a fee until after you've registered, and the free bits don't seem to work.
Don't think I'll waste any more time on it.

I was out on the water today at the race start. Conditions were quite lively, with strong southerly wind, gusting at times with turbulent eddies washing down off the high ground south and south west of Bilbao harbour.

Despite the many spectator boats in apparent disarray, I managed to take some 30 odd photos of the participants and the general mayhem on the water.

However, I missed Sir Robin Knox Jonston. By the time he came along east towards Plencia bay for the start, we had been ushered out North to clear a path inshore for the race start. It was important to have the initial miles of the race parallel to the shore so the many spectators lining the cliff-tops between Galea head and Plencia (there is a very pleasant walk along the cliff top) could have a good view.

As for the Velux site, it is almost useless. I'll be letting them know my opinions about it and the lack of free race progress tomorrow when time permits. For now, I sympathise with you .. Le Figaro was better organised in that respect when they came to Bilbao in 2005, with instant and zoomable graphic data on participants current postion, comments from them from time to time and so on, and all free. Why Velux want to charge for less I don't know.

sounds like you had a great day out on the water /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If anyone knows of and better websites for following the progress, please let me know. The Ecover site seems to okay to track the progress of mike golding.

Lucky begger - can you post them here ?

I'll give it a try next weekend when I have time to experiment.

If you send me your email address, or better still, your postal address, I can send you the photos. I'm on a slow modem line and the photos are some 800kb each, so I'd prefer the CDROM option by post.

Re: Sir Robin

I loved RKJ's e-mail:
