Velox Prop & Gear antifouling - one year on

You’re right Vyv, I took your advice and used hammerite etching primer. It was brilliant. In fact, it’s the only thing that I’ve EVER managed to get to stay on my prop.

Unfortunately, the Velox didn’t stick to the Hammerite! This despite me following all application instructions to the letter. If it had, I’m sure I’d have found it as efficacious as others.

I’m hoping the Silic One will have stayed on. So far, it seems it has.

I have also found the Hammertite special metals primer, as from Halfords, sticks to the prop but not the velox to the Hammertite and on a mid season scrub with about 60% adherence and loads of young barnacles, I note velox is Italian? I wonder if applying it in the UK spring is just too humid or some other environmental difference between UK and Italy?

I dried out today, I used Hammerite under the Velox, all applied inside the house. The Hammerite is 100% intact, the Velox is 95% gone. Slapped on sone Hempel hard antifoul.

I abrade the Hammerite before applying the Velox. Never had an adhesion problem since the first year, when I applied it without abrading. Now in year six, Velox still working well.

Vyv, I have a new prop shaft - what grade sandpaper do you use to etch stainless steel before applying Hammerite?

Not etching, which is chemical, but abrading. I am not absolutely certain how well Hammerite will stick to stainless steel anyway, as I assume its etching agent is caustic as used for zinc and aluminium. I would abrade with 180 grit.

The special metals primer sticks v well to my Featherstream blades which are stainless, I did abrade and degrease first
