Velcro Sanding Pads

I am using a Bosch triangular backing plate with velcro type hooks on a Bosch oscillating multi tool to secure felt back sanding sheets to it. Length of each of the 3 sides is approx. 90mm

I am finding the discs become detached ridiculously quickly whatever I do. I am using cheap sheets at the moment but used named brand before.

What are othe people's experiences of using this type of fixing arrangement.

In my experience the velcro pads on Bosch sanders are total cr*p. They’re worn out after just a few hours of use.

I've had some success with various brands of pads and tools in extending the ability of the velcro to work by using a powerful vacuum on both velcro surfaces before I attach a pad to the base. I feel that the velcro gets filled with dust while in use. Having said that I don't really expect the system to work very long without replacing the base pad. This can be a problem as not all brands have easily accessible spares, particularly the ones from discount grocers. Well I admit to the attraction of cheap tools.

Agreed. I’ve replaced the triangular pad on my Makita detail sander several times. The hooks just give up after a few hours use. Lots of replacements available from B&Q/Screwfix/Toolstation etc.

I can't remember how the collaboration came about, but Bosch use the same Starlock blades as Fein for their multitools.

You might find the Fein sanding pads better - I've used the small triangular ones a few times and never had this problem; the velcro is very strong.

I think I got mine from Axeminster.

They seem to be universal. My Makita ones are the same fit too.

They don t last as other say, the hook/backing pad is the week part. even cheap pads will stick if a god pad is used. I just replace as and when with a kit from Tool Station or Screw fix. On Orbital sanders i stick on new hook and loop, cheaper and can be better than a new backing pad.

On Bosch oscillating sander I use a stiff bristle brush to clean the pad from time to time. It does work and the sanding pad sticks better. Bush is just from a brush and pan set, but bristles are stiff. Eventually though I have to replace the pad, but not often.

By pads, I mean the bit on the machine, hook part.

I find they last longer, and work just as effectively, if I run my Fein Multimaster at slow speed.

I put a new backing pad on before using the tool yesterday which was before posting on here. The sheet pad adhesion was better for maybe the first couple of sheets but then got very poor.

I was sanding a very thin edge between door frame and architrave, not a flat surface.

It might be worth checking how hot the backing pad gets to see if the plastic of the hooks is weakening. Having done a massive amount of sanding over the past I use slow speed and good dust extraction. Have never had to fit a new backing pad even with the adhesive sanding discs of old except on a 2” orbital where the foam pad breaks up. My belt sanders on the other hand need constant maintenance where friction heat is the enemy.
