Hi again to all DIY boaters.
Some days ago I had asked for your help because I did not know how to callibrate 2 new vdo tachos/hourmeters. You sent me some hints but from what I saw there is a very tricky business and many of you gave up. So, after many hours of research and practice, here it is :
(VolvoPenta KAD42 - VDO model N02 012 165)
1/First of all check that there ac output from contact W of alternator. I had a broken contact on one and a corroded contact on the other, so not good signal. (After fixing them I have around 8,5v at idle)
2/Because volvo's vdo instrument has 2 wires (grey/black & grey), check which wire is in W contact of alternator and comes to the instrument. Note that volvo's wiring diagram shows the grey/black where in my case was the grey !!!
3/Calculate the ratio of pulleys of crankshaft and alternator. Measure not the outside diameter of crankshaft which is the weight but the belt pulley (180mm in my case) and the alternator pulley (75mm in my case). Divide and find the ratio (that is how many revolutions of alternator in 1 revolution of crankshaft). 2,40 in my case.
Now (as ybw mate "TraderCliff" explained to me very analytically), alternator has 12 claws = 12 poles = 6 north & 6 south meaning that emits 6 pulses per revolution. So, the number of pulses = 6,0 X ratio = 6,0 X 2,4 = 14,40 in my case.
4/To callibrate the VDO, you have to keep pressed the switch on the back of VDO and turn on ignition. "Pulse" & "Adjust" will appear and release the pressure when "Pulse" shows. A number will appear with one digit flashing. Start clicking the switch till you have the required number. When you stop clicking after 3 sec the next digit starts flashing and you do the same procedure. Instrument range is from 000,50 to 399,99 (in my case I entered 014,40). When you have entered and the last number, after 3 sec instrument will turn to hourometer showing 0,0. Callibration is completed. Start your engine and enjoy it !!!

With this opportunity I would like to thank ybw mates "VicS", "Earlybird", "Tetleys" and specially "RobBrown" & "TraderCliff" for their hints.

Keep it up guys

George

Thanks for the feed back.

I even understood it when i realised you use a comma as the decimal point rather than a full stop :)
