VDO DEPTH SOUNDER

I have just bought a boat with a VDO sounder fitted with a LCD display
The previous owner said it wasn't working.
The boat is out of the water, I've turned it on and the display powers up but gives random readings of between 43 and 68 meters and then 'ERRORS'
Is this because it is out of the water?
I did scrape a fair bit of anti-foul off the transducer.
Do depth sounders normally work properly out of water?
Seems a shame to replace it if it's ok but don't want to go back in the water and find out it needs replacing!

It will need to be in the water to work, leave the transducer where it is in any case, if the head is u/s it may be ok to run an alternative.
