We are buying a non Vat paid boat in Turkey, and will be bringing it intothe EU. Does anyone know the best place to pay the VAT i.e. cheapest!

Don't know that you have the choice. Certainly not for EEC boats. The VAT has to be paid in the country that the original sale was made.

We bought our boat in Greece and had to pay the VAT in Greece. We were told that Customs couldn't collect it in England.

Suggest you check with MCA, they should be able to advise you.

You have a choice as Turkey is not (yet) in the EU.

Thanks for your reply. Were you able to negociate with the Greek authorities over the valuation of your boat or did they just use the bill of sale? I understand that VAT is about 18% in Greece.

Sorry to disagree with you, but I think that comparing the purchase of a boat from Greece (which is in the EU), with a purchase from Turkey (currently outside the EU), is not at all relevant. The rules are entirely different for each case.

VAT on 2nd hand yachts is a real legislative minefield. See my reply on the Scuttlebutt for where I found the best information.
