To continue the story of trying to sell a two year old boat with ONLY a certified true copy of the original VAT showing invoice, the finance company have now agreed to go ahead if I will have "notorized" the true copy. I dispair as I have no idea what to ask a notary to notorize. I think I will keep the boat. Its much less traumatic.

AFAIK a Notary Public is a solicitor who is registered to undertake such work. A copy of an invoice or something may be 'certified' by, for example, a bank manager, but only a Notary Public can notarise it.

The problem you have is that if you only have the certified copy, how can a Notary possible notarise that the copy is a true copy when they have not had sight of the original?

Agree. Have gone back to prospective buyer to ask him exactly what he wants Notary to notorize.

I went through this myself when I bought a boat in Germany which only had photocopied documents and which were unacceptable to the British Registry. Basically it means getting a lawyor to confirm that the photocopy you have is a true copy of the original and I guess it means that you will have to take the document to a lawyor, sign a statement that the copy is a true copy and then the lawyor produces a document which confirms this. In your case, you might as well do it now as you will only have to do it in the future when you sell your boat
It's worthwile using a firm like Ward & McKenzie who will be familiar with this process and should be acceptable to the finance co
