I bought our boat privately, with a private invoice, I read a lot abouut proof of VAT, as i did not pay VAT, therefore, i have no VAT invoice what do i need

You need proof that the original VAT was paid when the boat was new. I guess if you are going to use the boat in UK waters then no one will ever ask but if you are going to tour the Med then there is a chance that it will be asked for. In the ybw.com web page there is a listing of other countries requirements and without looking I'm sure that most countries in the EU could ask for it.
However unless bought new how many of us have this proof.

If all else fails, well you've got a computer and I'm sure with a bit of judicious artwork, could make up a fake invoice from early 90's, just to "prove" it was paid in the first place. After all who's gonna check?

I have been fortunate to obtain the original sales invoice for my boat so I pressume that would surfice but would a copy of this be OK as I would rather keep original safe at home ?
