Vaseline/contralube

For some years I have used a product called Corrosion Block. It is originally from Canada and used in the aircraft industry. It comes in two forms, a liquid which is available in a spray can and a thicker grease in a tube. It is good for dodgy contacts, the plug for my hand windlass remote in the chain locker being a case in point.
We use it in our model boat sailing when contacts get wet, a quick squirt restores them.

That sounds like the stuff that is now marketed as AC-50. I have a spray can on the boat but haven't really used it so far.

I think it's similar in purpose to WD40 but is heavier duty than WD40 and longer lasting. WD40 now tends to be marketed as a lubricant (albeit poor one) whereas AC-50 has avoided that epithet.

Traditional thing in the battery industry is (or was, maybe there is something newer now) a mixture of petroleum jelly and lanolin.
I have used that on systems drawing many hundreds of amps and never had a contact resistance problem.
AFAIK the Contralube explanation is the correct one.

I use grease within the terminals.
I'm not that fussy about what grease, silicone grease, metallic grease such as no-crode or whatever it's called.
There was a big debate in the bike club about the relative merits of various goo on the active parts of the terminals.
So we measured some.
It makes no difference, IMHO it's all about keeping water and air out of the working parts of the terminals.

The rest needs to be kept clean.
Grease attracts dirt attracts water causes corrosion and current leakage.
The best thing for protecting the rest of the battery seems to be a good coat of wax polish or a silicone spray like gt85.
