Varnish- sanding between coats?

Well, I have impressed myself with the smooth finish from sanding but am now somewhat disappointed by the patchy appearance. The Hempel dura-satin varnish seems to have dried with varying degrees of satin-ness. Any thoughts? Would it perhaps be possible to polish it with a very fine abrasive?

This has had about 4 coats of gloss with intermediate sanding then finished with 2 coats of satin. Both coats have dried with similar patchiness yet I was carefull to apply and brush the varnish out as evenly as possible.

Some extra thorough stirring before applying with a wider brush has made a vast improvement to the final coat. Whilst i thought I'd stirred it well the last time, it obviously wasn't enough.
