Varnish Problem

The area surrounding my sink is varnished teak faced ply. The varnish was getting a bit thin so 6 weeks ago I scraped back to bare wood and put on 5 coats of polyuethene interior gloss varnish (Ronseal). I am very pleased with the finish-or was. We were out on her a week or so ago & I noticed the varnish had turned cloudy/milky where water had been standing for a while-eg. under a cloth or washing up liquid bottle. However after being dried off and left for a couple of hours this marking goes!

Any idea whats going on here? Can I solve by putting a coat of more waterproof varnish on top or do I have to either live with it or strip it and start again?

You might be better using exterior solvent based varnish, as some interior varnishes are water based.

Thise does remind me of the tin of paint which clearly said "Yacht Varnish" on the tin, but in the small print it said, not suitable for wet areas /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I suspect you have the water based one as well.

Rip it all orf again, and this time use something that is suitable for this application. I would be using a two pack epoxy varnish like Ultravar.

Or something like Epifanes or Le Tonkinois; they don't chip and are easy to touch up.

This is really a follow up to Alfie's comment.
Yesterday I bought a tin of International Yacht varnish from Focus do it all. On the tin in very small print it said not suitable for marine use.
I took it back!

Take it all off and start again, I second Epifanes, but a two poack might be better, m ake sure the wood is very dry, like warm it up with a heat gun or similar, to make sure no sink water has got on it.

Definately strip it all off and use what others have recommended, Epiphanes. It works.
