Varnish for a table?

Re-varnishing a mahogany saloon table. As I may be putting hot pans, and cups etc., upon it, I need a really tough varnish/lacquer. Any recommendations out there?

Treat yourself to a silicone hot mat. They don't slide off the table and will save your varnish.

I'll bear that in mind. I actually don't intend for hot pans to get on the table, just that I know that at some point they will. And hot fag ends. Maybe also bits of dead mackerel. All adds to the ambience.

Toughest is the two pack stuff - I like Ultravar 2000. Gives a really nice colour to the finish.

On some furniture I have made, I have used ronseal oil based varnish and wet cups dont cause any problems.

I really do not like water based varnish - The finish colour is disappointing, and water goes straight through it to cause rings.

Stainless steel is excellent for putting hot pans on. Just remember this when you see the rings form on your varnished table.

Normal polyurathane varnish works for me, stands hot cups no problem, not sure about pans or fags though.
