Van der Valk 20kts low power aluminium/steel semi-d designs.

I can see the appeal of aluminum, even if the hp per ton figure is low, if the tonnage is high you still need big engines. And it doesn't rust, Rusty

OK, it comes down to budget because welding aluminium is a professional's job. Rob got a quote for The Bonito 50' hull fabricated in aluminium: £120k+ vat!!!!

Thanks for the Bruce Roberts suggestion ....

"
For a steel hull at 15 Knots, Twin Screw at 150 HP may be achieved. But then the propeller design must match with the gear ratio and engine torque. Also, the W45 is designed as planing hull and its best to make it run over 15 Knots and attain the planing speed."

Forumite adrianm built this one, he's not posted for a decade now.

That's a lovely boat.....

"The Euro 1600 may be powered by with single engine (with optional "take home engine" ) or Twins ... the offshore semi-displacement hull is capable of cruising at around 10 to 14 kts when powered with single 350 hp or twin 200 hp to 250 horse power engines."

It appears that a steel semi-d' max speed is limited by its length, unlike a planing hull. Because its a medium vee it will try to plane at its transition speed and won't be able to get over the hump because of the low HP.

Bruce Roberts 45' 15kts 13tons 300hp
V.d.valk 16mtr 55' 17kts 30tons 870hp
Hoek 18mtr. 60' 20kts 31tons 870hp
V.d valk 21mtr. 70' 25kts. 38tons 1800hp.

The swift trawler range has a sophisticated grp moulded hull form, and even the st34' can get more than 20kts on 435hp.

I have a Swift Trawler 34 and when new I got nearly 21 knots, now even freshly painted it's just under 20. But it's fully loaded with a small rib, board and heaven know what. It's a Cummins QSB 6.7 and I love Cummins! Add all that plus the fact I'm an amateur welder you can see why I'm very interested in your train of thought

Its a very pretty boat, and has a fantastic reputation for seakeeping. :)

The price for a new 45' boat is many hundreds of thousands of pounds and after 5 years worth 50% less; so maybe a self build would work on the basis that's a cheap as chips to construct, and then accept that's its only got scrap value second hand which would still save a fortune in depreciation.

A 45' boat has a lot more space than a 34'.......

sorry just saw it.
It is not funny, it's hideous! Only excuse would be built in the mid 70ies but highly unlikely.

btw, anyone know what happened with Rob and his project? rusty?

cheers

Unfortunately he got laid off; I think he worked as an underwater diver/welder on oil rigs. As far as I remember the hull is fully welded up .

It would be interesting to have an update from him. I suspect, and hope, that he's busy at work again. And yes he was/is a commercial diver, many of whom were badly affected when the oil price crashed, meaning that many companies no longer found it profitable to pump oil from existing wells, let alone consider opening new fields. Which has a knock on effect on support staff. But there is still work out there, just much harder to find and doubtless not as well paid as before.
Iirc his boat was being constructed somewhere in Wales, maybe someone on here knows where?

Hi Vas

Is your wooden boat semi-d, and do you have any performance data?

it's a planning hull with a tiny 3/4 keel
What sort of performance data do you want? Don't think I have proper data, will have this year though with a few more bits fitted and able to log

What's the minimum planing speed, approx displacement?

I've sent a pm to Yoeri (23m build thread) from v.d.Valk to see if he has any construction photos of the hull.

Can't locate any on the net....anyone?
