Mobo's hold little interest to me but I like that one. Very nice looking boat. And the cost is ?

£1.4 approx ....lol.

I was thinking that it might be possible to build the steel version which weighs exactly the same as the alloy design at 30 tons , but with twin 435 hp engines to give 17kts.

Of course that's the new price, what's the price for this ten year old one?

The steel in a slightly smaller 50' semi-d Bonito weighs 12.5tons.
2x Cummins c series 450hp @ 700 kg each.
Shafts rudders and tanks 1 ton.

Say 15 tons before fit out of interior...that leaves 14 tons to play with!

Can't find prices for reman Cummins engines.....

From memory : approx £20k + £5k gearbox.
Plasma steel kit: £26k
Shafts + props £3k
Sand blasting £3k
3 coats commercial 2pack undercoat: £2k

Say £85k complete fabricated shell with engines: Leaves £15k for fit out.

Rusty, I was a bit slow on the uptake but are you saying that YOU want to build it? I assume you are a welder, it would be the mother of all threads!

Do you remember the rob71 build of the Bonito 50' planing steel hull? He was going to use massive 600 or 700hp twin engines , which was totally out of reach for us mere mortals .

I was just clicking on links when I came across the van der valk continental semi-d range by mistake: I never imagined that a 30 ton 55' boat could do nearly 20kts on 30hp/ton, and then I noticed that they have a steel version of the same design.

According to v.d.valk they have sold more than 100 of this model , so it has a proven record of seakeeping.

I've already built a 60' steel boat, so a 50' would be a lot easier from a kit.

Are you saying that vd valk supply the kit, or the plans and you have them plasma cut?

I very much doubt it, they're super yacht builders, so wouldnt be interested in supplying kits.

The Bonito was available as a planing boat and as a semi-d; Rob chose the planing version, but unfortunately they have now gone into receivership.

But the point here is the concept of a steel semi-d 50' which will take the cheap and readily available Cummins c series 450hp engines found in millions of commercial boats and trucks .

if you'd suggested this design concept, I'd have thought it totally impossible because of the weight of steel vs. aluminium.

It makes sense, and Cummins are great lumps. But where do you get a design?

This design is s/d, but in alloy. Not sure how much it would cost to convert to steel.

Perhaps a bit optimistic with 450hp/20kts.
"For higher semi-displacement speeds one could easily make use of 450 or more hp, which will yield vessel speeds in excess of 20 knots (depending of course on fuel load and other vessel loads). The top speed achieved with greater horsepower will be more or less in proportion to the power applied. As always, range will be exponentially reduced at higher speeds."
