Van de Stadt 8m Offshore- any love for 'em?

Hello Kelpie, I came across this thread when researching the Offshore 8m. just curious if you ended up buying one? I’m currently looking at a (serious) project boat in my area, and wondering if all the hard work and the cost to get her up and running will be worth it :) Thanks, Laura

Laura,

Welcome the forum, hang in here

No we didn't, we found an Albin Vega for sale locally instead which I think is pretty comparable and we liked a lot. Maybe a little easier to sell on afterwards as they have a good reputation.

If you read PBO you'll find that one of their columnists, Marsali Taylor, sails one up in Shetland and seems to like it.
Thanks so much for that :)

I stand by my comments made in 2009 - they're good boats, but I think as with all boats you'll never get back the money you spend on them, except in pleasure. That said, the Offshore 8 is a fairly simple yacht and shouldn't cost too much to renovate. We sold ours in 2013 for something bigger (a 40' Oyster :) ) and I know the next owner greatly enjoyed her - including some club racing - until she too moved on to a larger yacht. The next owner was the guy we originally bought her from in 2007, so he obviously missed her so much he wanted her back!

A very good "sensible" Dutch design for their time in the 1970s. Sail well and able to take some tough going if necessary. There was one in a club I belonged to that was sold to several owners within the club and was loved by all. I recently saw her at Shotley looking very neglected and lonely. Sad that this type of boat is no longer popular.
