I would like to check and re-adjust these as necessary. I have checked the owners manual on the web, which only gives the required clearances but says "must be done by a volvo Mechanic" or words to that efect, so not much practical info there. Having done this job to umpteen car engines I would like to find out is the procedure similar,ie the "rule of 9" as used in many 4 cyl. automotive engines. Is there an equivalent trick with the VP. ? and is there anything else I should know before I start? If anyone has done this job himself I would be interested to hear how it went.

exactly the same as any other pushrod engine. turn the engine with a spanner on the pulley bolt until two valves on one cylinder are rocking ie one valve is just closing as one is opening. then rotate the pulley 360 deg and check the clearance on the two valves that were rocking. repeat for the other 2 cylinders. doddle.
