I posted recently on searching for a replacement remote for my Opacmare passerelle. Several replies, but it became clear that most of us don't know where to go, they're a bit of a black art and most chandler/dealers don't really want to know as they are expensive and confusing to their staff on which you need and how to configure them.

There are two situations as I see it:

1. You drop the unit in wet stuff and it is lost or at least ruined as they don't float too well.
2. You're concerned that this may happen and think ahead to getting yourself a backup.

Sourcing proves difficult and then silly pricing then puts you off as one can't see value in getting a spare as, 'It won't happen to me.':o

In my case, the one 4 button unit I had was broken and if I pressed a button, it would stay jammed in.

I was fortunate to luck into a company called ABACOM Technolgies in Toronto... YES, Toronto! :encouragement:

I have no connection with them at all other than a being a very satisfied customer and have no difficulty in recommending their services.

Find them here:

They sent me two units by return that looked the same as mine:

Unfortunately, they didn't work too well. I played around for some time with the dip-switch settings to match those displayed on my receiver box below decks near the passerelle itself. I found I could perform all functions if I kept both remote controllers active, one in each pocket.

Obviously, this was not an ideal solution. I opened up the units and took detailed photos and emailed them back to the most helpful chap, "John Barclay" of Abacom'. He replied straight away and said, "Ah, a picture worth a 1000 words etc." It turns out that Opacmare use a different processor the the standard TX-12.
Still he offered to repair my original unit which he did also by return! Which I have been using all along and is absolutely fine.:D

But I still had no back up...

John then asked me if I would carry out a real world trial on development versions.
This is what I received, as above but I labelled them for easier identification:

Now, I'm no expert but configuring these is a 'doddle' provided you know where to look on your main receiver to get the dip-switch settings.

Technically speaking for those that want it. Here is a quote from John about what can be done:

For starters, the first thing to identify is whether the remotes' are DIP switch configurable or not. If they are not DIP switch configurable type, then I cannot provide a replacement solution as these are typically coded in such a way that they cannot be reproduced due to sophisticated code hopping algorithms used. If they are DIP switch configured this will be a good start and I can probably provide a replacement solution in most cases. Of equal importance is the operating frequency of the transmitter: most of the them however, certainly for Europe, will most probably be operating on 433.92MHz.

The processor type used is related to whether the remote is coded with DIP switches or not. The actual processor type is not that important....what is important is as mentioned in the paragraph above. Of course, the user needs to have a record of his 10 position DIP switch settings in order to configure his replacement remote. If the remote is lost, then they would need to get the DIP settings off the receiver side. The remote setting and receiver setting must be the same in order to get comms. The first 8 DIP switch positions are critical as these are the system ID or system address.

So as you can see in the pics above there is an original chipset version, modded to Opacmare and Abacom's HT Version. They arrived very quickly by air-mail last week and on Friday evening, I lifted off the front of the controller, set the Dips' and Hey Presto, they both worked beautifully.

All functions as hoped for!

As I said in the heading a 'value solution'. Abacom offer various models with one, two and four button functions. Prices on the website from $39 Canadian and to me that was great value and service not heard of over here lately, so credit where it due. :encouragement:
