Hi team.

I am re-engining in the near future. My MDIIB's oil pump is worn and the bearing is suffering as a result. It is a runner and has alot of new bits on it (top end overhaul last year). I am budgeting at the moment and my question is:

Is there any value in old MDIIBs (in otherwise v good condition)?
Or is it just scrap? Should I be considering making it into a coffee table?

Try boats for sale ad ...... and also poss Ex & Mart

Some want old engines for spares.

Did you think about replace with another and use yours for bits - as you say yours had o/haul ......

The engine won't be worth a lot, but if the gearbox is good you should see a hudred or so for that - they are incresingly hard to get.

Don't sell any bits / gearbox's till you know whats going in its place.

I was aksed for my box etc. on the 4-99 when replacing that. I said I would wait and see .... good job too - all bits that wecould were taken of old installation and put with replacement engine.

Some sod whipped the bloody water pump of my old one while standing in yard shed though ....

Try Paul at coastal rides he would give you an indication as to what it is worth to him and then its anybodies guess. Or alternativley how about buying the parts and asking a marine engineering college to make it like new for you???

I hear that The Dover area is soon (september) to start a new Marine engineering course at their college.and are keen for customers and equipment to refurbish as projects.

Hi we re engined our centaur a couple of years ago with a beta 23 hp. Its about a third of the weight of the volvo i dont know if this helps?

I had this problem recently with my old MD2B, but fitting a good second hand oil pump has brough my oil pressure back up nicely and it runs perfectly again. If the rest of the engine is in good nick, I'd suggest this option rather than scrapping the engine. I bought an old MD2B for £130 odd, so I don'tthink you'll get much for a failing engine.

Have you looked into the possibility of having the oil pump re-engineered?

I am possibly in a similar situation where the oil pump is slow to prime. I've been told that this is possibly because the pressure relief spring is sticking (and I have a new one to fit when I get round to it). If that is not the problem then it must be wear. I don't know if an engineering company could skim the surfaces to return it to its tolerance

My MD11C oil pump has just failed suddenly. I don't think any serious damage has been done as the engine still turns over and fires easily. The pumps are now obsolete and not stocked by Volspec. My local engineers is encouraging me to re-engine but if I could find a pump I would like to try replacing it first. Does anyone know where one can be had. I have not taken the old one out yet to see what the damage is. Also I am interested in whether the pressure release valve you mention could be the culprit.

Talk to John Hawkins Marine at Chatham (01634 840812). They are experts in old Volvo stuff and get me just about everything for my MD7. Very helpful and knowledgeable people. Recommended!
