Well, the old girl is out now and as I've said before is presenting a nice clean btm to the world.
One of the props on the Volvo 270 outdrives has a bent blade - about 2-3 inches is bent over enough for summat to need to be done.
Should I carry out simple knock back into shape myself or would it be worth sending both props off for a refurb? If so who do you recommend?
Is there anything else I should consider - confirm right size/pitch etc etc?

I've used Steel Development in Merton several times for duoprop rebuild and repair and they're excellent. Don't have number handy, but I've got a sneaky feeling their web address is their name. Failing that they advertise in the mags. Don't think it's worth trying to bend them back yourself, you won't get them balanced and only about £30 to get them done properly. Their turn round time, even in summer, has never been more than 3 days.

Cant say fairer than that. I,ve used em for a number of years now. best service i had was drop it off in the morning, pick it up late afternoon. less than 24hrs at no extra cost. Exceptional

but how about four bladed

Any idea what they might charge for a four blade tug prop
I want to repair it my self but it's very expensive to get the rods ,BOC can supply them but the lowest amount is 2.5 KG and works out at around £80.00 with the flux
I only need 6 rods !!

What about pitted props. Not bent just old age and poverty. Can they be metal sprayed or anything. I suspect when mine comes out, about spring time. Its time for new ones or repair.

Re: New props?

Steel develpments also do new stainless / alloy props cheaper than volvo, they perform better as well, very pleased with the ones I got from them.

Re: but how about four bladed

Ive seen some pretty big props in there, the way they price the refurbs is down to prop diametre, Ali prices range from £29-35 thats upto 16" dia, anything over that is POA bronze props add £2 to those prices, dont say anything about number of blades. Their number is 0208 874 7059 hope this helps

Been down the yard this pm and managed to remove the bent prop fairly easily so ready to send off for repair on Monday. Thought I might send both for the treatment but getting the other one off proved a different matter. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I just dont seem to be able to lift the locking ring tags enough to start unscrewing the nosecone.
Anyone else have this problem? Any hints or tips?

Re: New props?

Not at all, just a slight slime on them that comes off with the first couple of miles run. No barnacles or weed at all ! BTW on a performance issue, gone from 1.3mpg to 2mpg on 3.5 ton boat, twin V8 petrols. Only downside is anodes don't seem to last as long.

Re: New props?

Anodes seem to barely last a season, whereas used to last a season with a bit left over.
Taken over a full year, I would say anodes on ally = 12 months.
Anodes on st/stl = 10 months
All approx of course, still a small price to pay.

Hi Tony,
Yes, I've used them many times too. Used to get the prop rebuilt and balanced each year between seasons on the Thames after the inevitable encounters with shopping trolleys conveniently parked in the water around Oxford!!
By the way, if you go to visit them personally, don't be like me the first time and look for a shop or business premises, they operate from a terraced house.
Like everyone else it seems, I thoroughly recommend them, good service sensible prices.

Cheers Peter.
