Hi
Does anyone know where i can buy some uv resistant thread from pls ?

The sort you would use for repairing sprayhoods etc

thanks

Hi,
You might try "Hawk House" in Gosport or your local sail maker. Base line in Southampton are also a great source of thread.

Hello.
"Dabond" polyester threads are reputedly amongst the best. Google "Solentsew", they are a company from Portsmouth and they sell it. Ebay sometimes has it, but I have just tried there and no joy right now. However a good alternative to the somewhat expensive Dabond, try Ebay for "bonded polyester".

The best UV resistant thread is PTFE. Googling 'PTFE sewing thread' produces lots of hits, many of them in China. There are a few UK ones, this is one of them. No idea whether they do small amounts.

I would imagine that any decent sailmaker would sell you a small reel. My new hood and sailcover were stitched with it.

Which is what I have got.DABOND CH UVR Polyester 1 oz V-69 Black and white

A word of caution about PTFE thread.

According to Solentsew and Sailrite it is tricky to sew with - low frction so the machine tension needs adjusting (top and bottom?). No first hand experience I'm afraid.

Dont use V69, thats not heavy enough. You really need a V92 for hoods and covers .That out lasts the V69 by about 3 years.Kayospruce do small cops of Invicible thread in various colours, for indistructible thread try Tenara at £70 plus might put you off the purchase but will last longer than the cover !

Do not by the v69 or d92 from Coats. this stuff fades if less tha 3 weeks and turns white by the end of three weeks. Also strength is lost just as fast. buyer beware !!!

coats thread - v92

You are right - 69 is too light. Also the V92 from Coats is no longer worth buying. I made a new enclosure over the winter with captains navy canvas and used matching v92 thread. The thread faded and turned solid white after just three weeks. Then I noticed that it also was getting weak. I contacted Sailrite where I bought the thread and they did nothing but send me another bobbin to replace the defective thread. Then Sailrite contacted Coats who has done nothing but did say they would test the thread to see if there was a problem. Well it has been about 8 weeks since I sent the thread to them and they keep giving me dates that they will provide test results - but they never do. So bottom line do not buy from Sailrite or purchase Coats thread. If you do you might just have to watch you canvas fall apart after a few months out in the sun. They provide no warranty at all other than to give you another bobbin of thread. End result - I have to remove the enclosure from the boat and re-sew the entire thing - for the second time. If you guys want to see the actual thread problem with dated pictures as it fades - let me know and I will email to you.
