Recently, possibly in the last month there was a thread ! and someone mentioned UV proof polyester thread and gave a link to a supplier. I thought that I had booked marked this but now can't find it. I've tried searching using google and the search here but with no success which is fairly normal for me.

A link to the post or the company selling the stuff mentioned would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Likely Point North (also known as Pro Fabrics)..

Either their bonded polyester V69, or V92 if your sewing machine will cope with the thicker thread.

Thread - Marine

Edit: Corrected "chippie with the ticker" to "cope with the thicker". Darned auto correct.

Ah.. just read the original post. For sail repairs... just the standard V69 or V92.

To be honest. Steer clear of the Solarfix PTFE unless your are seriously good at setting tensions on a sewing machine.

Gutermann Strong, sometimes called Extra Strong, is the stuff - M782 . Dunelm Mill often have it or (for example I have not used these people) :

Extra Strong, Gutermann Sewing Threads - Fast Delivery | William Gee UK

I think you only need white for boaty stuff, last time I got some it was a bigger reel, so it might be worth looking around if you intend to use a lot. It works very well, not as strong or thick as V69 but can be easier on a domestic machine.

No mention of UV or rot resistance in that link so while it might be strong I’d dig a bit deeper first or just use the stuff mentioned above. Standard threads can fail after a year or two outdoors, the only benefit is they’re easy to rip and remove for replacement!

PS.

If you are not happy with the suggestions so far check out the Contender website....

Gutermann do a specialist product - Solbond, (not used it myself) which may be the one you heard about? Bad news is that you have to buy 3000 metres, better news is that it will cost c £40 delivered
They also do Coates Dabond, (which I do use and like) a little cheaper.
