UV strips Port or Starboard

In one of my previous posts it became clear it is important which side of the sail UV strips are sewn if they are on furlers with a wire luff rope. I assume the wire used on all our sails is the same lay (right hand?) and if so all our UV strips should be on Port side when the sail is set. This is because there is the most twisting pressure on the wire rope when furling. If the UV strip is on Starboard when set the force exerted by the furler attempts to untwist the wire rope.

When looking down on the furler it should be turning clockwise while furling the sail.

I have 2 jibs, one UV strip port one UV strip starboard. The unknown sailmaker who fitted the UV strip to Starboard has cocked up?.

Anyone agree/disagree with above?

I don't think it matters. Both boats that I have owned with furlers had the UV strips on the starboard sides. The instructions for my Furlex account for strips on either side with no preference. Sailmakers making new sails have always asked which side I wanted the strip.

I see you are referring to a furler, where the sail is furled around the wire luff, in which case you are right that the sail must be furled so the torsion tightens the lay of the wire, which in turn dictates the side the uv strip is sewn. If you were refering to a roller reefing system where the sail is rolled onto an aluminium luff spar/tube, which takes the torsional loads, then the lay of the forestay wire is not relevant (in which case the sail will have a rope luff) and the sail is rolled in the direction the roller reefer drum is designed, which then dictates the side of the uv strip. If your two sails have the uv strip on different sides maybe one was made for a different system or, yes, a sailmaker got it wrong.

Quite correct. No relevance whatsoever to a reefing head sail. Only one with wire luff on a furler such as Wykeham Martin. Only thing you did not confirm is that all wire ropes are laid the same and that my interpretation that the UV should be on Port side when the sail is set.

I do not know if all wire is laid the same way although all i have seen are, including mine, and my headsails have the uv strip on the port side when set.
