UV resistant Zip supplier

Thanks, all for the advice on thread ( we are getting there!) One item being sewn is the mizzen stack pack and we now find that the zip is now U/S after 3 seasons in Spain.
The plastic is fine it has not gone brittle but the cloth part is just disintegrating. It was bought from a marine supplier and advertised for marine use.
Can anyone suggest a reliable supplier for the replacement? Is 3 years as good as we should expect? The zip has a protective flap but I suspect we have not ensured it is used.

I had the same problem and had to replace zip on my main stack-pack . To prevent this again, I sewed a 10cm flap down one side to cover the zip. It also had the benift of reducing the rain entering the stack pack. - you may not have the problem in Spain.

You could try Kayospruce at Segensworth, Fareham they sell all canvaswork types and qualities I you ask they might send you their catalogue of all stainless fittings, press studs etc too, else view it on-line.

S/he gets very tanned and eventually burnt when subject to too much UV.

Yes !! I was waiting for that! layed myself open in fact.. broken zip to blame!

That's the best thing to do. I made my winter cover easier to handle by cutting it in two and joining the two parts with a zip, over which I sewed a flap with velcro to hold it down.

I have always assumed the fabric part of any zips from places like Point North are not very UV proof and ensured they are hidden from the sun...



This did just get me thinking though and a quick internet search shows up websites like

I wonder if there is a difference? If nobody in this forum has bought these, what's the quickest way of testing their UV resistance?

Most sail cloth suppliers, North, Bainbridge also supply zips and thread. They might not sell retail. Try people who retail cloth for biminis, people who sell Sunbrella etc. Zips come as long toothed 'tape' you buy by the metre and the thing you pull is sold separately.

This is the size 10 continuous zip from Profabrics / Point North...

One would expect it to be slightly UV resistant, being in their Marine section and available by the metre. It does however fade rather quickly if exposed to sun throughout the year.

YKK from Sailrite or others. They last as long as the Sunbrella they are attached to. Many re-sellers, including many sailmakers.

I replaced my stackpack cover zip about 4 years ago, bought from Kayospruce but this time I fitted a flap over the zip, especially the end which on the previous zip was in the sun. I noticed this a few years ago and fitted a cover over the zip end fastened with velcro before the fabric disintegrated. Both the old and new were zips were YKK.
