using VHF - boat's name or radio call sign?

What I find interesting is that there is a new format for the Mayday and I hadn't heard about it. There is a database of all VHF licence holders and I read every word of PBO every month - and I hadn't heard about it! What's the point of millions being spent on updating procedures if they don't tell anyone!

The database you refer to is, I assume, the ITU MARS database.
ITYWF it's intended as a source of info for S&R. In fact only authorized users have access to all the data it contains. Hopefully those who need to know about it will know about.

The main change in the Mayday procedure is to include the MMSI number. I imagine it's something you learn if you do the DSC operators certificate. It's of no relevance to those of us with only non DSC radios

I heard it from a CG lady after the weather last week.

But yes, it did cause a chuckle. Somehow it seems so ingrained as a part of the daily vernacular. Bless.

Mind you I did have to explain it to the passengers, err sorry, family crew.

Immensely embarrassing, I use it all the time at the end of a call and every time I do, a split second after I have, I shudder and think what a plonker but by then it's too blooming late....... Must be an age thing ;-(
