Was looking at buying a small outboard for our tender, a 2m inflateable.
Plenty of direct drive 2hp outboards available, but I wondered what peoples experience of using them was as I have only had ones with forward reverse gear before.
Are they practical or too much of a pain to use?
Thanks

not really a problem - on starting you get a little pull, but you can (assuming sure footing) hold the boat against it anyway.

Going backwards is a bit more of a pain, but only in that you have to spin the engine around - once you get the hang of it it's no big issue.

always worried about it before we had a 2.5 hp Tohatsu on our tender.

At starting revs it has very low drive so not a problem to start, reduce to tickover whilst still moored up then let go and use throttle as normal.

Does make a really simple and light engine but wouldn't fancy it with more power!

Reversing - no probs - the engines turn through 360 degrees so just turn it round and back out that way.

We have had a 2HP Honda for over ten years. Its fitted with a centrifugal clutch so at tickover the prop is not turning

+1

Had a little Honda 2hp for years (the one before the centrifugal clutch), and at tick over easy to hold, you get very used to cutting the engine before you get to your destination and drift the last few feet... easy.

You'll have no problem holding in place with the small thrust at tick over.
Actually can be very useful, we used to go bow into whatever and let the engine keep us pushed in.

If I needed to start the engine before loading up with people etc, I would tie on the stern before starting.
