Using our VHF's

.... but also after a bit of research, could have been troposheric ducting which can happen in front of an approaching cold front and the weather was a bit strange around then with fronts bouncing down the South Coast. So
Does happen from time to time. Some years ago, I and the two boats we were with all clearly heard Dover Coastguard...........from Sonning! Spooky!

Ok, but when do we start arguing about aerials up.... and will there be an Aerials Up Cruising Club?

Paul (M0LHR).

Aerials up is a very dodgy practice inland, as we have found out to the tune of 2 aerials now:D

We do however have the aerial up when on the salty stuff to give it some more range

(although the one we have just fitted is about twice as long as the boat!!)

My aerial is at 45 degrees when I installed the vhf I was able to speak to London VTS and get a radio check I came in at 3 by 4. So not bad. So I'm guessing they have repeaters.

I do usualy have it on scan by only ever seem to pick up London VTS.

Mind I could put one of these on and then be able to talk to Scotland.
