Hi guys,

Can I use those stickers that are applied to calor gas bottles to indicate the level of fullness of the cylinder (the fluid gas interface I presume) on my metal fuel takn for which I currently have no guage? what do you think?

Kind regrads

No, the gas bottle interface shows a temperature change due to evaporation of the liquid. The strip marks this change. This isn't the case with a fuel tank.

No. The stickers work because as gas changes from liquid to gas, it cools the side of the bottle and the sticker shows the boundary between warm and less warm.

In a fuel tank (diesel or petrol) there is no such mechanism involved, so any temperature gradient (and it can exist because of the difference in fuel temp and air temp) will be much much less, or even non existent. Also because fuel tanks are bigger they tend to slosh around a bit, which evens out the temp on the side.

Touching or tapping the side of the tank will give a rough indication of the level.

EDIT
B*gger. Early Bird got the worm.
