if this shower that are in government do go ahead and get rid of red does anybody know what the situation is on burning alternative untaxed fuels such as 28sec fuel oil?

i am talking about from a tax point of view, not the mechanics of it. i know that the addition of half a pint of cheap straight 30sae lube oil to a gall of paraffin or 28 sec oil will bring the second numbers up and burn ok without damage to a diesel engine.

Apart from any other consideration, getting the quantity required to the boat regularly would be a bit of a pain.

From what I've read, all hearsay, if/when red diesel is done away with (2007??), business e.g. farmers can claim back the tax, not the VAT from white.

What's 28 sec oil....never heard of it.

Here is an alternative, its more for the motor boats amongst our fraternity, burn avtur its jet fuel, and is very cheap to buy......but you need a small tank of deisel as well because most deisels won't start on it, so you would need a change over valve as well so you go from deisel to start then run on avtur......keith

I watched a TV programme of some guy in the noth of the UK running a merc auto on used cooking oil with a low percentage of diesel. They paid the tax and made an enormous saving anyway. Would this work???

You can run your diesel on used chip fat. Just be aware that it smells like a chip shop on fire as you motor into harbour.......

28sec is what you buy when you buy heating oil, aka paraffin

Re: Biodiesel

Just been discussing this very topic this last week. I know of someone who makes it, runs his car on it.

He's just sent me a really good email.....all the facts. PM me malcsworld@ntlworld.com and I'll forward it if anyone is interested.

None of our equipment in the navy if run on avtur/avcat would start from cold, yes when warm it would start, we used it during the (few) bad winters we had and the deisel was gelling and we used it in the snowploughs and the snow blowers

No techy details .... but >

You can get a diesel to just about run on anything ..... veg oil, kero, even petrol in right circumstances .... BUT - you must make sure that a) ignition point on compression is suitable, b)that it lubricates the pumps / bores etc. similar to Diesel, c) its heat characteristics do not exceed diesel, d) it is not so explosive that it exceeds the capability of the engine cylinders etc. e) it does not burn and produce compiunds detrimental to the engine and its sump oil etc.

A diesel may be a 'lump' but it is a sophisticated lump that does not appreciate being toyed with. The recipe for 'chip-oil' is proven - but noe that it has additives and lub-oil to bring it to near required specifications. It would be interesting to hear a manufaturers 'honest' comment about its use .....

Anyway - in the quantitys required by many - I have reason to believe that all of these alternatives would probably be contravention of Customs and Excise Duties etc. Its not actually Road Tax .... its C&E

Addition of Kero

Jet fuel is not Avtur is not Avgas ...... they are actually commercially slightly different .... no need for actual tech specs.
Kero - which is base Jet Fuel, in its quality form is Jet A1 - is often added to diesel to reduce the Cloud point in cold weather - it also assists cold starting of diesel.

BUT I would not recc'd running a diesel engine on Kero without serious concern for lubrication and heat characteristics. Kero is too volatile and thin on its own.
