Useless brokers

Erm, you know Essex Boatyards are actually already in Southampton...? :D

http://www.essexboatyards.com/contactus/

Yup, been there a few times but 90% of their stock/display boats are in the back end of Essex which is a long trek from Southampton/South Coast.

Needs someone to open up a similiar yard down here IMHO where you can browse a variety of boats in one place rather slogging around the country looking at mis-described tat!

I totally agree with Henry regarding the Boat Shed style pictures. I want to see some overview pics to see the general layout etc, then some detailed shots where relevant.

I thoroughly hate their way of advertising. Your search results on xzy-yachts.com returns a Boat Shed ad, you have to go to their site, find the boat again, register/login, then look at tiny pics of minute detail, trying to piece together in your mind what the layout is like.

Why the hell do i need to register/login to look at the pictures anyway ?

If you find that you'd like to have the pictures emailed to you (preferably in their original form) and need some other information, it seems that some of their brokerages don't bother to reply to your emails, even if you send them again a few days later.

Yup, but browsing doesn't pay the rent. For that to work, you and other customers (not me; count me out) have to be prepared to pay extra for your slice of the rent on 6 acres of Hampshire water front property. Aint gonna happen.

More generally, if Henryf were to go into the boat dealership/brokerage business that would be a very good thing. He's dead right on all this stuff imho

Are boatshed the people who took time to photograph the stain in the carpet on the bloke's old model Princess which prompted my original "why isn't my boat selling" thread on the P42?

I don't like photos that you have to mentally jigsaw together, I'd rather see overall images which show detail but also allow you to put the information into perspective. By all means zoom in on something to show how pristine it is but a jubilee clip is never going to look fantastic and if you get in close enough you'll be able to spot where the screwdriver has left justification marks in the metal screw.

Things like your carpets: if you've got the original ones which are in pristine condition then fit them. By all means once the pictures are taken bring them back home until you do a viewing but how else will the would be buyer know you have them?

I think it's even more important if you want to tempt someone to travel a bit to see the boat. I'm even contemplating boats in Spain when looking at the moment. Not sure I'd travel as far as the Wales though :) If its a great boat at a good price then the logistics of bringing it back to the UK can be dealt with but I want to be bloody sure all the ducks are lined up before I get on an airplane and I need some degree of temptation both financial and also visual.

If you know the price is right then I reckon with a bit of fine tuning you could get the thing sold.

Henry

Just to add, you mention Antifoul and anodes done April 2011. Does that mean they are due again now? If so I'd either get it sorted or take that bit out. Also space the text out a bit to give bullet point type presentation. You've got a load of gear on there but it all gets a bit lost.

Yes, boatshed are the brokers for Haydn's Princess 35. Carpets will be going down to the boat soon!

Yacht Brokers

Hi Henry
it was I who spoke to you a couple of times about listing your Princess on brokerage with an upfront fee.
I quite appreciate that you have never heard of such an idea -we are actually the first brokerage company in the Uk to develop this model, which is the way that the estate agency market in the Uk is going at the moment.
While I appreciate your reluctance to part with £295 in advance, when you compare that against the 5 - 8% which most brokers will start off with offering you, it is a real bargain as it offers your boat access to all the major professional boat sales websites (as well as Google)which are not available to you as a non-broker.
We can only offer this sort of value by charging in advance, as all the listing fee goes into the marketing campaign - we only make any profit when we sell the boat and sell you a "Conveyancing Package" to handle the paperwork, at £695.
Our total fees are only £990 (£295 + £695) to do everything except the actual viewings, which we think compares quite favourably to the established status quo
I appreciate it doesn't work for everyone, but I enjoyed our conversations none the same! ;)

It has been a real eye opener selling my Princess 42.

"I've subsequently been approached by brokers of various ability levels. My biggest bug bear is people trying to rip you off by charging you to include the boat on their brokerage - which I've never come across in my years of reading the magazines or my current search for a replacement for the P42. I even had one bunch who wanted 1500 of my hard earned pounds to list it on an on line auction which didn't even appear on Google when you entered their bloody name !!! Let alone something as random as Boat Auction.

Some want £300 to list your boat on all the major listings sites, others want £20k plus for sending a punter over to you and sorting out the paperwork. They even want £4,000 if you sell the boat independently of any work on their part !

Henry :)
