Useful Tips

Between coats of varnish or paint put the brush in a bag in the freezer rather than cleaning it.

Always whip rope ends with a contrasting colour so that you can see the end easily if the rope is in a heap.

Big syringes are useful for applying sealant, measuring small quantities for mixing etc. Irrational as it is, it is up to ten times cheaper to buy sterile medical ones in a box of 50 than to get them from your resin supplier. While you're at it order a box of wooden tongue depressers - cost next to nothing and great for mixing, squidging and so on.

As well as Amulet's tongue depressors, a Value bag of disposable plastic cutlery from the supermarket is handy for dealing with resins and sealants. The different shapes (back of spoon, tip of knife, end of handle, etc) are good for different sized beads along 90º joints.

A pack of plastic cups is good for mixing pots - for varnish as well as resins.

For making fillets in mastic etc a better idea than tongue depressor is a putty knife
Grind the required radius on the point & as you drag it along put the straight side against one surface & the repeat with straight on other surface. In this way you can scrape any excess off with the putty knife rather than excess building up & going round the side of the stick. Having a decent handle also helps.

I prefer to use a small plastic measuring jug for this. Apart from being much more sturdy than a bag, it has a handle so it's easier to hold in place and a flat base so that after just dropping everything into it in one go: base, bowl, filter, seals, fuel, you can sit it stably on deck as a reservoir for all the bits as you go through them discarding or cleaning for re-use as appropriate. Mine was 45p out of ASDA IIRC.
I agree but i still spill some fuel as it is in an awkward place. So i lay a disposable nappy underneath first. I carry several for mopping up oil & fuel spills

Agree on the plastic cups for mixing. At the end of the summer some years ago Superdrug was selling off utterly naff picnic boxes - a poly box with plates cups etc. I bought a large dose of them at a couple of quid each and all their contents were valuable gloop mixing and spreading equipment. Even the boxes are still in use.

Surely everyone knows to acquire a plastic washing-up bowl which fits into the galley sink? Perhaps not so much for washing-up, but certainly for holding the tea/coffee mugs when making a brew at sea - and most certainly for passing them up into the cockpit 'all together'....

Volvo Shaft Seal Greasing

Grab a handful of McDonalds straws (big and wide). Fill with the grease, squeeze the end flat, insert in between shaft and seal and squeeze all the greece in - simple.
