Noticed a yacht stuck in the mud at a strange angle just outside Porto Solento tonight. Sorry too lazy to fetch phone to take a picture but I did feel sorry for the fellow. I guess he had been there for some time as I was there just an hour after low tide.

Would this be the chap perhaps?

Where is Porto Solento?

I see, you give it a Mediterranean name to help you forget that it is an overcrowded, not value for money boating hell hole with soup coloured sea.

Does it work?

I think you missed "and next to a landfill site".

I quite like it, though.

Rather like on the local radio in Berks when Reading had lost a footballist contest to Bristol and they had a phone-in to find reasons why Reading was better than Bristol. The #1 reason: "It's not only separated from Wales by a narrow strip of brown water" :D:D

Pip, pip

It's actually built on a landfill site - that's why there are all the methane vents hidden in the bushes. I remember taking rubbish out there in the early 70's - you could see a lot of the rubbish in the soil when they were extending the gym a few years ago. It is "next to" the motorway and the RN firefighting school.

The description: 'overcrowded, not value for money' applies to the South of England in general ;)

Actually, with the weather we are having this summer it does feel very Mediterranean.

Having visited just a few ports now in the Solent, I think Port Solent gets rather a bad press. I find it a pleasant place to be with lots to do and plenty of choices as far as eating and drinking goes and if you didn't know it's history you wouldn't notice it was built on a land-fill site. There is history there as you pass a castle of Roman origins on the way in/out.

Perhaps you should come and see for yourself? Obviously, as implied you do have to follow the dog-leg channel with care.

Oh, I wasn't trying to imply that I was anywhere other than in the UK which is why I spelt it as I did and as other formites have in the past.

I've only been the once but I really liked it too. Lots of cheap bars and places to eat and no shops for SWMBO to spend in. :D
