Used Mangusta 72 - PROS and CONS

So:
- a jump from 51 to 70 feet shouldn't be a problem, but,
- probably I should stay away from Arnesons, specially with ones without documented history...

I would not recommend Arnies to my worst enemy. They are a pig to handle unless you are happy to give it the gas. I have seen professional skippers crying trying to drive these in any sort of wind. Dont worry about putting fenders out as when people see you come in they will get theirs ready for you..
Two years ago whilst minding my on business in Marina Ibiza I saw a Mangusta come in, I think it was in the 80' region, crew on the stern was a newbie and didnt know the ropes to well. He ended up in the water when skipper went ahead.... Fortunately there were enough people around to warn the guy else there could have been a nasty accident.
However each to their own. But be assured it will cost you a lot of money in the long rung. 50k sounds reasonable but you wont be doing much boating if fuel is in that. Last year we spent 1.5 that n fuel alone.

Any suggestions for alternative (w/o Arnesons), approx. 70 ft, 3 cabins, similarly priced boat?

Princess v70, Fairline Targa 62, Azimut 68S are all about 10 years old now. Princess v65 is older and you'd buy a 2000-ish model for under £200k now.

Well, we have been looking for one for over 6 months, and only found run down boats, or for very silly prices. Anyone have any idea about some good ones at a correct price ? No queue of sellers here...:-(

I also know of a 92 Mangusta for 895euros. PersonLly I think we have talked our selves out of it. The crew quarters on the 72 is not workable in the us. The 24m leopard is also one to check out. Glad to talk live. Just pm me.

What are the silly prices? A well maintained 72 with the big 1550hp engines always sell 700k. I sold a 2007 for 750k last Summer.
The prices are now about 500k for the ones with twin 1300hp units.
You can find cheaper but it want be a turnkey boat.
If a Mangusta is well maintained the price premium is very much justified in my book because of its very luxurious exterior deck and interiors.
They are also heavier build to your standard Sunseeker or Pershing.
Due to the new engines and equipment the one in the Bahamas is not a bad deal.

I’m late to this thread and may have missed some vital detail. Does the OP say how old this boat is ? I have been boating in South of France for 20 years and Mangusta’s and Leopards (the locals prounounce it with a big O, Lee OH pard) ...... they are big fast glamorous boats. That’s the good bit. The bad bit is that all my friends that have owned them have commented that they are not especially well made like say a Ferretti or an old Riva...... they consume fuel like a battleship(Think in the region of 800 litres an hour at 30 knots) and they require significant maintenance.
I am staggered, even horrified, that some of you think you could run a boat like that for £50k a year...... so much so that I am now worried I am paying at least twice what the rest of you are paying. Even without crew And without using any fuel, it will cost more than euro 10k incl tax to get those engines and outdrives serviced....... given you can’t do the arneson s in the water. In Cogolin it would cost 1500 euros just to lift the damn thing out of the water..... a 72 ft berth at my end of SoF is between 22,000 and 26,000 Euro a year, assuming you can find one, If it’s cheaper elsewhere then it will be harder to get one ! Anti fouling the thing would be 3 or 4,000 euros down there..... do I need to go on ?
There is a reason that there are so many of them for sale and at cheap prices.
My advice ? These are not cheap boats, never have been and never will be. A friend of mine had to change a generator and had to dismantle the whole boat to get to it...... Euro 100k..... grim. He used to go from St Tropez to Monaco in a chartered helicopter for the day because it was much less expensive than going in his Mangusta...... that’s got to be a bad sign......it’s only 45 miles !
This is a bit like the old days when i used to see Ferrari 400’s And 308 GT4’s for sale for peanuts in exchange and mart (remember that !) ....... the reason was that they were cheap to buy, but ruinous to own.
Buy a mangusta because you love the look, and don’t mind pumping the cash in....... don’t buy one for any other reason ! The newer ones are expensive because they work, the older ones are much cheaper because either they don’t or they soon won’t...... simples.
The company that owned Mangusta used to part ex old for new on very attractive terms and allegedly ended up with a fleet of old and indeed not so old ones. The rumour always was that there was a Mangusta graveyard in some marina in Tunisia or Morocco where they were left to die...... even if that is apocryphal and it may well be, No one ever said that about Princess or Ferretti !
