Anyone know of a likely source for used bicycles near Gib, We are going there next week and want to buy a pair of bikes just to get around on, ideally folding types for eventual use on the boat.

I know it is not really the correct forum but I do read PBO....

Following might be useful information if you don't find any second hand folding bikes.

We bought 2 folding bikes from Carrefour at La Linea in 2014 for about 85 GBP each (can't remember euro price). The bikes have lasted well and we still have them o the boat. They even threw in a voucher for 12 beers with each bike. Obviously not the best quality but they have gears, racks and reflectors. Also less likely to be stolen than an expensive model.

I think Carrefour do deals from time to time and a friend got a "Black Friday" deal around 85 Euro at Aguadulce. Friends bought their 2nd hand ones at Almerimar where they have the odd boat jumble.

Sorry for lack of information about 2nd hand bikes in Gib.

Wont get much luck in Gib. Could try local papers mebbe, Gib Chronicle and Panorama. Small ads.

As mentioned, La Linea or better still the big retail park towards Algecieras would be doable and buy new. Bus ride from the Station in La L. will get you to Decathlon.

The man with two dogs may be gone by now though! ;)

Ask around in La Linea marina, they had a pile there outside the office, collected as abandoned by the marineros

Also try "Sol" the English language newspaper of the Costa del Sol.

There's a Decathlon store not far away.

I seem to remember that one's from Decathlon were rather expensive when we looked in 2014. I think that they started at around 250 euro for a basic single gear model with no rack or reflectors. Perhaps they have improved but Carrefour were much better value. Classed as cheap rubbish I imagine but we've cycled 100s of km on ours over past 4-5 years.

Plus Carrefour is a good walking distance.

Just heard back from a friend who lives on his yacht in Marina Bay and is a most excellent source of knowledge. He recommends looking on the Gib Facebook page will likely turn up a result. Far better than the papers I thought about!

excellent replies thanks, carrefour looks like a good bet or the marina, as it happens off to Almerimar directly from Gib for a week so perhaps there.

Anyone in Almerimar want to take me sailing for a day...

Decathlon bikes are here https://www.decathlon.es/C-1146420-bicicletas-plegables . €150 for single speed, €200 for gears.

They are the ones we looked at, 150 euro without gears and 200-250 with gears. I'd obviously only remembered the 250 price. You really need to get one with gears and a rear rack is extremely useful (bottles of water, cans of beer etc. when shopping). Still glad we went with the super cheap Carrefour ones at 85GBP with gears and rack. I suppose Decathlon ones might use better quality parts to justify a higher price.

Carrefour price is 129 euro just now and I think that's the same as 2014 but we got an extra discount plus beer vouchers. A friend was also lucky with an even better discount than ours. Perhaps our bikes weren't selling as well because they had white frames.

Yes Carrefour look like the best spot... had a few of their bikes over the years.... not the highest quality but if kept moving and out of the rain they lasted till they were outgrown......

Thanks
