Hi,

Has anyone experience / used products similar to these for both leisure and engine start on their boat ??

http://www.batterymegastore.co.uk/product/LFD180/

I am considering using them as a bank of 4, but wonder about their suitability a) being maintenance free, nothing mentioned about them being 'deep cycle', and b) as engine start although the quoted CCA is more than adequate.

Can the electrical experts advise please ?

My last boat had maintenance-free lead-calcium batteries, and they typically lasted around 8 years. If you routinely deep discharge batteries, they won't last long though.

???? The description does describe them as "Deep Cycle".
Not that they will be true deep cycle batteries.
For most purposes Leisure batteries are fine. Varta are as good a make as any.
Four of those is a pretty hefty bank.

Apologies for the mis-spelling in title :-(

Existing battery bank is 4 wet batteries of varying ages, all 170AH or bigger, and are up to 8 years old. All need occasional topping up which on the port side bank is rather difficult. Whilst all seems ok at present it more than likely they are at the end of their useful life.

I'm not an expert and have destroyed my fair share of batteries in my time but, with a CCA of 1000, they are not deep cycle by a long shot.

These are very big batteries. Did the OP notice mass of 45kgs so not easy to fit or remove. This is why people use 6v batteries being high capacity but half the weight individually that is. Being such big batteries even though not designed for high CCA high cca is inevitable. olewill

Slipped disc material here - one notes they're "reduced maintenance" not "maintenance-free" - so will still need attention and, as already pointed out, will need gentle treatment, no deep discharges or rushed re-charge.
20% premium, saving a monthly check and top-up.
Incidentally I run a mix of sealed and open lead-acid (one particular box size is only made in maintenance-free) and find I get twice the life out of the open lead-acid.
