Usb power in cabin, an alternative?

usbC devices will still charge t just under 500mA in a USB2 power output, least the ones I measured do anyway. SInce there's no great rush on a boat I'll just stick with them , maybe one day if a 12v in USB3 charging socket comes available stick on in but no real gain for now, prob same on most boats.

500mA at 5 Volts is 2.5 watts. I hope you are getting more than that. The USB 2 standard allows 1.5 amps if there is no data transfer. So you might get 7.5 watts. USB C standard goes up to 5 amp at 20 volts - 100 watts. It is fair to say that as yet the available cigarette lighter chargers only seem to give about 45 watts. However it is enough to drive a typical laptop, for example. So it is while it is true that some USB-C devices will charge slowly on a 5 volt USB socket, forget it for anything that is power hungry. It won't even nearly keep up with your laptop. The point about USB-C is that it enables USB charging and powering of devices like laptops and cameras. This will become the standard and it will mean that you no longer need dedicated chargers for such devices. You just plug them into a USB socket. I have old style USB sockets on my boat too, but I wouldn't put any more in.

The phone/tablet I've tested will only accept lower rates unless there's some set voltage on the data pins for usb2 or however usb3 does it. Doesn't matter how much power is available. Not really a problem for most, can't be that many running high end expensive modern apple laptops onboard.
