Has anyone got any experience of hooking up and using a cheap USB GPS (as advertised on Ebay) to a laptop running Maxsea ?

I don't want to blow £20 and then find it won't work

Thanks
J

My answer to your question is no, I don't have such experience, however I do have experience of MaxSea run on a PC with GPS input.

MaxSea is written to receive and transmit data through PC RS232 Serial ports thus you will not be able to configure MaxSea for a GPS receiver which is directly connected to a USB port. MaxSea will receive data through a RS232/USB adapter but to use a USB GPS you would require a USB/RS232 adapter and I don't think such a beast exists. Use a conventioanal NMEA output/input GPS receiver with a NMEA/RS232 PC cable.

My answer to your question is yes and I do have such experience. Most USB receivers come with a software driver which creates a serial com port which Maxsea can access to receive the GPS information.
However whether the ones you have seen on ebay come with the required software I do not know, but if they don't all is not lost as you can get 3rd party software which can create virtual com ports.
