Can any advise if I used a standard computer USB cable to run the data and power to my Yeoman Sport Plotter the cable would work and be suitable.

Basically looking to cut cable in half and use the socket and plug to provide a removable connection for power and data.

TIA

No, USB power is 5V and you need 12V to power the Yeoman. The plotter doesn't have an USB interface - you'd need a USB/serial adaptor and to run 12V power to the plotter

Ooops, quite right so he was...

If the cable is a proper USB extension cable it will be fine to use it (it's designed to handle 500 mA against the Yeoman current draw of 250mA). When you cut the cable, it has 4 cores - 2 signal and 2 power

Sorry about the confusion

If you have a laptop you may find that there is no power coming down the USB cable, because some laptop makers understandably do not want the battery run down by peripherals, so the USB ports are unpowered. Best is to test with full USB cable first, and cut afterwards

Having now cut a USB Cable in half and prepared it for soldering, I can confirm 4 cables (as expected) a Red and a Black which is a heavier gauge for the 12v and 2 light cables for the data (NMEA).

This should provide a nice solution allowing me to connect both GPS to the plotter.

Thank you all for the advice. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
