USA Win! Is Dean Barker's career over?

Thanks a bloody lot Viking! Have been avoiding news all day in anticipation of watching it on BBC tomorrow. If I wasn't such a gentleman this post would contain a lot of swear words. I'm really pissed off.

Then you won't have wanted to listen to the radio news or watch the TV news either. It's been all over everything. Greatest escape since Lazarus.

...I think Sir Ben would be the first to say there were a multitude of things that contributed to the win, but the speed differential was clear to see in the last race - it looked like the "Americans" had an extra gear....

Struck me like he was up for taking credit for motivation and team management on Radio 4 "Today" this morning.

I don't think Barker has much to worry about, in the final race he did everything he could, but as Ken Read put it at one p[oint they got 'boatspeeded to death'. I'd imagine if anyone's career is going to suffer from this it's probably going to be John Kostecki.

Indeed, I think that last night Jimmy and Benny and Tommy were pretty chilled about following Emirates TNZ to mark 2 because they knew they would be 30-60 seconds faster on leg 3 and, short of a catastrophe, there was no way back from that.

PS I have been a great advocate of watching it live but I couldn't last night cos a fire alarm went off in our building and, although I had decided to sit it out with ear defenders, a PCSO hauled me off to safety. So watched the BBC prog at 23:50 which was interesting, specially when the "expert" introducer said the boats were 72 metres long. Now that would be something...maybe next time Larry Ellison will specify that. ;)

Sorry! But did you think you would go around 'blind and deaf' to any news of the 'cup' for 24 hrs!

I saw it suggested elsewhere that they fitted some sort of control system which adjusted the rudder foils when the boat tacked; it was based on tech developed by Boeing and offered to both teams, - TNZ apparently declined it.

What part should I have left out without giving the result away? Anyway you in the UK had the result an full hour earlier then me here in Norway! :0)
As others have said - the "USA Win" bit. Actually, the whole title. Could have called it "What a great race", or something to encourage comments without giving the game away.

Sir Ben is going to have to be careful with his interviews as with BBC repeating selected bits I got the impression that if he had turned up in a Laser he would have won! On could be forgiven for thinking that Team/helm/boat designers had nothing to contribute if you hear the selected interview extracts. Having heard fuller comments when after the race Sir Ben did give credit to the team I think he is sufferring from the UK aspect being exagerated by UK news media.

Can someone help - what is the cost of the actual boat seperate from what is the development cost?

I heard reported (albeit on the BBC) that the boat build cost was circa £8M. I guess because it's all leading edge stuff it would be difficult to truly untangle build costs from development costs as chances are many of the components would have needed new or evolved technology to produce.

So the mercenaries beat the patriots. In the world of modern so called sport, no real surprise. I realise that these a re real professionals, at the top of their capabilities, and good for them. But attaching national flags to the boats is long out of date. Dollar bills on one and whatever they use in the Emirates on the other, fine.

And in the very best traditions of the history of the US of A. One historian described the war of American independence as a series of scuffles in the backwoods where their Frenchmen beat our Germans.....
