It looks like the USA is likely to roll-out a ban on anything containing copper. It's starting in Washinton state in January, and I expect we'll see it happen across the USA and caribbean over the next few years.

Interestingly, it's not just a ban on supplying and applying the stuff, they're also banning any recreational boat under 65ft with copper on their hull from entering their ports.

This was on Boating Business News

"In 2011, Washington became the first state to adopt a no-copper paint rule. And from January 1 2018, no new recreational boat up to 65ft can arrive with copper on its hull and no copper can be sold or applied to a boat after January 1 2020."

So, anyone thinking of taking their boat that side of the atlantic, would be wise not to spend out on coppercoat.

But at least they won't have invested thousands in their antifouling.

How long before the EU goes the same way I wonder????

Bloody Bruss... oh wait.
Actually maybe this will spur on development of alternatives.
Just to clarify, this will apply to coppercoat as well as traditional copper based eroding AF?

I wouldn't worry. The way Trump's going, plutonium antifoul will be legal there soon.

It's not very poisonous unfortunately. And having barnacles with an increased risk of cancer in their old age won't do much to maintain boat speed.

So a scooty wee boat is seen as doing untold damage to the environment, while a dirty big ship with the same antifouling does no harm? Crazy!

I wonder if my decision to investigate ultrasonic anti fouling was a good one and I should invest in shares. :D

Ummm ... this is what the legislation actually says:

RCW 70.300.020
Antifouling paint containing copper.
(1) Beginning January 1, 2018, no manufacturer, wholesaler, retailer, or distributor may sell or offer for sale in this state any new recreational water vessel manufactured on or after January 1, 2018, with antifouling paint containing copper.
(2) Beginning January 1, 2020, no antifouling paint that is intended for use on a recreational water vessel and that contains more than 0.5 percent copper may be offered for sale in this state.
(3) Beginning January 1, 2020, no antifouling paint containing more than 0.5 percent copper may be applied to a recreational water vessel in this state.

Depends on how much damage and disturbance your ultrasound does to dophins and other marine creatures in the vicinity of your boat. At sea copper antifouling only affects nasty creatures on the surface of your hull.

Ah. Anyone know off the top of their heads how much copper as a percentage is in (say) Cruiser UNO or Tiger?

No, put it's in the safety data sheets. For Cruiser UNO

Looking at the (Irish) Biocidal Products Register , most popular brands of antifoul have about 30-40% Di-Copper Oxide as the main active ingredient often with something like Zinc Pyrithione as a further additive. I can't recall how to work out the relative mass of Copper with 30-40% Cu2O, but I'm pretty sure it will be outwith the US limits!
There were a few varieties with 25-30% Cu2O range , and a few with 40-50% Cu2O range, but most are in between these extremes.

Them there invasive species will love that. They'll be dreaming of world domination already.

The next act on th list says;
RCW 70.300.030
Recreational water vessel hull cleaning—Best practices.
The department, in consultation and cooperation with other state natural resources agencies, must increase educational efforts regarding recreational water vessel hull cleaning to reduce the spread of invasive species. This effort must include a review of best practices that consider the type of antifouling paint used and recommendations regarding appropriate hull cleaning that includes in-water methods.

Presumably copper sheathing, as was done with old wooden boats, will be outlawed as well. What about copper fastenings?
