US import tax ?

Does anyone know the rate of tax on boating goods imported from US.

I believe from previous postings it is 3.7%

On boats it is only 1.7%, so buy a boat and fill it full of boaty bits.

Remember there is VAT as well.

You also have to pay VAT @ 17.5% postage including. unless you can manage to get it sent as a gift. Also different goods attract different rates of tax. Some items also require an import licence

So for a canopy at £627 incl. shipping I would pay £627 + 3.7% + 17.5% = £763.98 ?

Looks right to me. just check to make sure the duty for that item is correct Eg cars 10% historic cars 3.7%. boats 1.7% earlier than 1985 no vat.

I would check the import rate unless your sure.

boats are 1.7% but things like boat trailers for example are about 7%, not sure what a canvas would be regarded as and so not sure on exact import duty, if it were me id check with customs first in case its something stupid.

obv. make sure that on the invoice the company marks that the price includes C&F or customs will add a figure on top for that and then calculate import then vat.

Are you sure that pre 1985 there is no VAT Ive always been lead to believe that its on any age of boat and if customs think that the invoice looks well below Uk expected value they also can ignore the invoice and work from their own adjusted value figure.

Be interested to know if your 100% sure on that VAT point

I have asked C&E the question in import duty and the answer was: Boating related goods will attract duty between 1% and 5% depending upon the item. Then vat is added on purchase cost + shipping + import duty.

Unless it s changed in the last 15 mths that is the case I looked into evey aspect of buying & shipping over here great savings on 40' 50' vessels. I am still going to do it in the next 12 - 18 mnths when I make my final move to Spain.

thats interesting ive imported quite a few boats from the States but have never heard of that pre 1985 situation, thanks might be useful to know.

Dont want to be teaching my grandmother to suck eggs but reading your post would you have the boat imported to the Uk and then skipper it down to Spain? reason i ask you obv. have to be very careful into which country the boat first arrives with regards the CE plate etc. In Belgium, Holland and many others customs will hold a boat that arrives without CE plating until it has one, the UK the customs dont see it as their job to do that so no problems getting straight in, I always make sure the first port of call for the freight ship into EU is UK so no problems with it getting held by customs,but like i say not wanting to bleat on if youve done all investigating.

like you say massive savings on all sizes and types of boats, especially now with the dollar so weak.

My first plan was to import to England but now Ive got friendly with a broker who regulary imports to Spain so this is my next move. I dont know all the ins & outs at the moment but when I do I would only be too pleased to pass them on to you.
