I just clicked a link to a picture on another forum which set off my antivirus program ( McAfee) It said it had detected and disabled a trojan.

But I now have something called Animalware Doctor, or at least a free trial version installed. It says it has detected 21 threats to my computer and now wants money in order to remove them.

It says they can cause slowdowns, crashes and freezes'
Slow webpage loading, privacy violations while surfing

Download superantispyware, & do full scan

Isn't the name Antimalware Doctor? if so, it's scareware. Do a google search for it, you will find removal instructions aplenty.
NB. Never never pay them!

Which forum, Vic??? ;)

Saving Old Seagulls General topics forum. Post about fitting a bicycle dynamo onto a seagull Posted by a regular user.

At least I think thats whats done it. if not it was a link from here immediately before i went there

It may stop you downloading any antimalware (redirects to another site) or running any antimalware, they are getting pretty good at this.
If that happens, try booting into safe mode and running your antivirus, or download an antimalware like superantispyware or malewarbytes onto a pen memory on another computer and run it from there. You can also try doing a restore to a point before a problem, but then you'll still need to do a good clean if it works.

It seems it was not the Seagull forum, at least its not caught others

Prior to that I was reading the lunar eclipse thread in the lounge and looked at Sarabandes link

eeek !

EDIT

I have just removed the link. Very sorry folks, if I have opened a viral door.

FWIW.

I have Zone Alarm and AVG free standing guard on mine.

I'll do a scan and see if it comes up with anything.

The full story and how to uninstall it is here.

Here is malware removal also
http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

both free, and easy to use.

VicS, if you have trouble removing this trojan try the method in this link. To get the "processes" list that he mentions in his first step, start the Windows Task Manager (ctrl/alt/del keys at the same time) and click the processes tab (apologies if "teaching grandmother to suck eggs" but he doesn't explain that bit in detail).

I've just completed a Superantispyware full scan.

A load of tracking cookies as usual, and couple of Rogues.

No sign of VicS's attacker though. :o

I got the name wrong

Its Antimalware doctor as earlybird pointed out

Dunno how it slipped in if the Seagull forum is not to blame and Sarbandes link was clean.

I'm running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware at the moment. Somebody hereabouts recommended that a while back but I dont think its going to help.

Not confident to try any of the remedies I've read so far.

Call somebody out I reckon. Or put it in the skip!

Putting it in a skip is a bit drastic and calling someone out probably quite expensive. Do you have a local computer store? Maybe one of those little shops run on a shoe string by an enthusiast. They'd be able to sort it out in no time if you could take the PC in to them.

Vic, I will be in Kent Friday afternoon to go see my Mum if you want me to do it for you.

Download r.kill, download microsoft security essentials, start the machine in safemode, run r.kill then malwarebytes, dont restart until malwarebytes has finished. Uninstall your existing av and install MSE, run a scan in ordinary mode. If it still picks up **** it tells you the path to it and you can then follow the path to the file and uninstall or delete it. The prob is they are v clever nowadays and will keep reloading as you no doubt have found out. I have just cleaned a particularly difficult one doing the above

Avoid the issue - don't use Windows OS in any form

Lots of Linux distros - your computer will load x2 as fast you'll have no malware and a decent firewall.

It's scareware - probably the most effective overall antivirus/firewall is Kaspersky, though it doesn't respond to quite as many threats as Symantec.

Are you running a version of Windows with System Restore provided and enabled ?

If so then the first, simplest thing to try is restart the computer in safe mode, then restore to a point before the infection, then reboot back into safe mode to allow the restore to complete, then reboot normally.

Hth,
