I have a Ford 1.6 Diesel engine. Can/should I upgrade the alternator and roughly how much is a new one. I need to know before 8.20 tonight.

how many batteries?

what amperage, what is the amp capacity of the existing one?
rule of thumb one third of battery capacity is what you need, how much for a new one? dont know but why not visit your friendly car breaker and get a second hand one

Re: how many batteries?

Thanks Sonsy Lass.

Currently 2 x 130ah but may add 3rd. Don't know current amperage, I've been trying to find out on the web. New replacement is on ebay for £25 and I'm just wandering if I should replace or upgrade.

Re: how many batteries?

2* 130 = 260 divde by 3 you need at least a 60 amp or bigger, doubt that the little ford has one that big. however sterling alternator booster will certainly help
say you used half you battery capacity 130 amps, you would then take, using a 60 amp alternator and sterling, 2 hrs at least to recharge. think abourt it and do the sums, without the sterling your ordinary alternator is about 50 % inefficient and would then take forever to recharge. going bigger on the alternator only helps if ypu have an efficient regulater to shove the amperage in safely quicker./
