I am unrepentant. OR 4751 gives us a quote from the Flanders News about windsurfers on the ECF ...... So isn't it reasonable to think that there was some relevance to the East Coast of the UK ? I thought despite coming from the Flanders News that perhaps this was a EU directive, or something.

DoM there's scope for much more misunderstanding, I for one interpret the post by Guapa to mean that windsurfers on the East Coast will be shot at by Belgian snipers hanging out of their SAR helicopters. We need your help DoM to put a stop to this vile practice, only you can help, are you up for a concerted thread hijack based solely on the misreading of a single comment in a previous post? Just for clarity, the Beaufort scale is used around the world. If an F5 is mentioned it does not necessarily refer to the weather in the UK.

My neighbour is an avid windsurfer (perhaps that is not the right adjective?) and would be incensed by the Belgium 'rule'. He doesn't think of going out until it is AT LEAST F5 and is positively excited by 7 or more.

Going up the Columbia River on the West Coast of the US a few years ago, the windsurfers were all waiting around until the wind was over 40 knots. They felt it wasn't worth going out in anything less as there was insufficient chop for them to really enjoy themselves. Of course a very different situation to the North Sea as the Columbia is protected waters.

Which is the point several windsurfers made in one of the newspaper articles I posted a link to.

I don't surf myself, but I can see both sides of the argument.
One the one hand, the freedom for the surfers to engage in their passtime of choice.
On the other hand, is it fair to expect the taxpayer to foot the bill every time things get hairy?
If an SAR helo has to scramble several times in one day to rescue as many as 35 of the blighters in one day (!!!), it does not exactly demonstrate an accpetable/reasonable level of responsability being exercised by the surfers.
